Kisumu is a Kenyan city located on Lake Victoria and the capital of Kisumu County. It is the third largest city in Kenya and serves as the main city in western Kenya, previously serving as the capital of Nyanza Province and the headquarters of Kisumu County. Kisumu is also the proposed headquarters for the Lake Region Economic Block, a group of 15 counties in western Kenya.
History: Kisumu was established in 1899 and was strategically placed on the shores of Lake Victoria. The city was a hub for trade and transportation and became the terminus for the Uganda Railway. The first steam ship, SS William Mackinnon, was registered in Kisumu in 1900 and marked the beginning of the Lake Marine Services. Kisumu was also the site of the first flight in East and Central Africa and was a landing point on the British flying boat passenger and mail route. The city connected Port Bell to Nairobi.
