The Kenya Veterinary Vaccines Production Institute (KEVEVAPI) was established as a state-owned institution under Kenya’s Cap 446 laws on May 5, 1990, through Legal Notice No. 223 on June 4, 1990. This was after the dissolution of a partnership between the government of Kenya and the Welcome Trust Foundation of the UK. The establishment of KEVEVAPI was achieved by merging three separate vaccine-producing institutions in Kenya, including the Vaccine Production Laboratory at Embakasi, the vaccine production section at the KARI-National Veterinary Research Centre at Muguga, and the vaccine section of the Veterinary Research Laboratory at the Department of Veterinary Services headquarters in Kabete.
