United Nations – Risk Information and Coordination Expert Full Time

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

The Disaster Risk Reduction Specialist will be responsible for the following:

1. Develop and implement disaster risk reduction policies and strategies in support of the UN’s sustainable development goals.
2. Conduct risk assessments, identify potential hazards, and evaluate the effectiveness of existing risk reduction measures.
3. Provide technical advice and support to governments, UN agencies, and other partners on disaster risk reduction and sustainable development.
4. Monitor and evaluate disaster risk reduction programmes and projects to ensure that they are achieving their objectives.
5. Analyze disaster risk data and use the information to support policy and planning decisions related to disaster risk reduction and sustainable development.
6. Develop and deliver training and capacity-building activities related to disaster risk reduction and sustainable development.
7. Represent the UN in meetings and conferences related to disaster risk reduction and sustainable development.

Qualifications/Special Skills:

1. Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in disaster risk reduction, administration, management, economics, social sciences, engineering or a related field is required.
2. A first-level university degree in combination with at least two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
3. A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration or related area is required.
4. Experience in the domain of risk knowledge, risk assessment, disaster risk data, quantitative data analysis and use of risk information in decision-making (policy/planning/investment), sustainable development and climate change or related area is required.
5. Work experience in disaster risk reduction relevant aspects of sustainable development, early warning systems, development planning, humanitarian planning is desirable.
6. Relevant experience working for international organizations such as the United Nations is desirable.

Languages:

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English and French is required.
